With demand for the wild ramps increasing, harvesting may be affecting native populations so I made the decision years ago to begin cultivating ramps by planting seeds and bulbs purchased from our friends at Mountain Gardens.
Ramps are usually not sustainably harvested as many dig up these plants with rhizomes attached but new harvesters may be unaware of the practice which kills the plant and it takes five years for ramps to be mature enough to harvest. If harvesting levels keep rising, fewer plants will be left behind and populations may decline.
Forest farming of ramps offers us an alternative to wild harvesting and allows these endangered plants to propogate themselves in our protected forest at our farm to be available for future generations to come.
